Your Weekly, Sunday Interlude: “Senza Un Perché”

I’m watching HBO’s “The Young Pope,” and this song, “Senza Un Perché” (Without a Reason) by the Italian singer Nada Malanima was prominent in Episode 4. In brief, the series is loaded with uncertainty about faith, religion, trust, truth, hope and loyalty. And it reflects my country’s current political condition. Senza Un Perché offered pause in the story that I found particularly comforting.

You don’t need the translation to understand it’s about melancholy and futility. But here is one English translation:

She never speaks
She never ever says anything
She needs love
And she thinks the world isn’t just that
That there is nothing better
Than staying still in the mirror
Which is how things should be
When you feel down
And the whole life
Goes on endlessly without a reason
And everything comes from nothing
And nothing remains without you
She never speaks
She never ever says a thing
It’s not strange if she asks for forgiveness
And she did nothing
There is nothing better than being silent
And she hopes for the best
For a light summer that hasn’t come yet
And the whole life
Goes on endlessly
Without a reason
And everything comes from nothing
Nothing remains without you
And the whole life goes on endlessly
Without a reason
And everything comes from nothing and nothing remains without you
She never speaks
She never ever says anything
